I'm such a newbie at Martins but I'll tell you what I've heard. I've heard that Creative Universe has the best poles...strongest. But many people I associate with online also have the S & K poles and they seem fine, but the consensus seems to be that Creative Universe poles are better. I would strongly recommend that you NOT get a telescoping pole. They are the cheapest but are a lot more trouble! I can't remember...you probably have one already. Ours was impossible for me to do by myself and twice I had dead martins in it for quite awhile because I was waiting for my husband to help me lower the housing. Now I have a rope and pulley system. If you do get a rope and pulley system or even better a winch system, you will never go back to the telescoping pole. Mine started to stick and became impossible to raise and lower ...hard even with two people. I have a pole that has room for a house on top, since I had one, but if I could do it all over again, I wouldn't put a house up...my martins don't even look at it. Here's a system that is just for gourds.
I've heard good things about two gourds. The S & K gourds, the Bo-11 is what I've bought recently and from Creative Universe the Horizontal Troyer gourds. Almost everyone recommends that you buy tunnels to put on these so that starlings etc can't reach in and snatch babies and so that the martins have a place to sit.
I think you've been hosting martins as long as me??? Paula and others here are more experienced.
Call the Creative Universe number and talk to Diane (she seems to always answer the phone when I call)...she's so very helpful and doesn't mind spending time helping you out on the phone. Even if you don't end up buying from her it is nice to get her opinion and she's so helpful.
