Please tell us a little bit about yourself, your location and your experiences with Bluebirds. Hello all , I'm Shell , and I love bluebirds ! I've had blues for about 5 yrs now. And lots of babies . I do raise mealworms for them too. But man, can they eat alot ! That's o.k. with me though. I've got lots of stories and experiences, and came here to share and learn more with all of you. I'm glad this forum was created !

I'm Janie and I am also a bluebird lover . I've had one couple in my yard since March, 2002 and they have fledged 24 baby blues since then. My female, "Ma" and my male, "Pa," are my favorite backyard birds. Last year they chased off all of the fledglings from their first nest but allowed 2 to remain from the second. This year, much to Ma's dismay, they were not able to chase off the first two groups of fledglings and with those and the 3rd group of fledglings, I have 12 (or more) in my yard for the winter! . It is an awesome sight! Bluebirds are just plain different! I like most of my backyard birds and enjoy observing them but nothing beats the behavior of my bluebirds. So far, I have been blessed and do not have the dreaded House Sparrow (HOSP). I have taken care to make my bluebirds as safe as possible and do have their little house pole mounted and baffled with a raccoon baffle. I made many, many mistakes with my first nesting but was very fortunate, found lots of expert advice, made several changes and experienced no distasters. I feed mealworms daily and have a mealworm farm in progress......still ordering huge amounts of mealies at this point but hopefully, someday, I'll be able to rely totally on my farm. I'm very happy to be a member of this forum! BTW, I live in Atlanta, am married with two sons, 21 and 18 and have the most beautiful lovebird (Oliver) in the world! Janie

Growing those mealworms takes some patience 'eh !! But oh they love them . Well when I started w/ my 1st bluebird nestbox, I was living in Alabama , and had NO hosp problems. So for 2yrs, or longer, I had it great ! , made in the shade. But moved here to Louisana and it's an agricultural area , and in the boonies of the country, and some people around here have horses and chickens & such, so with all of the wildlife feed/seed , hosp have been a problem. But, so far, no deaths, no fights that led the blues away from me(my yard/area) , thank goodness!!!!! I have had a Loggerhead Shrike problem No deaths of the blues yet. But he has taken a tiny Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, Female N Cardinal, and a dove He even started to come to the mealworm feeder! I thought that was very strange, and asked many people on two other forums I belong to, if they had ever seen such a thing, and they had not. So, I emailed Cornell Lab of Ornithology, they were very interested , had never heard of this behavior from a shrike, and wanted to know if I had pictures of it. And of course I did, I'm a picture taking crazed woman LOL So, I emailed the pics to them and they wanted to know if they could keep them to share on a new website they were working on. Well I said YES ! Educate everyone , to be aware of it. Because it's not a really good thing. But then again, if the shrike eats the mealworms too, maybe he'll leave the blues alone ! I'm writing a book , aren't I !! Sorry about that. Well, it's great to have met you and glad I have a bluebird forum !!

So glad to be notified of the forum thru email. I use to belong to the Bluebird List Serve , and I got so weighed down w/ the list in emails, I unsubscribed. But didn't unsubscribe from the Bluebird nut.com newsletter that I found through that email list I'm smart that way VBG! Thanks for the welcome , and I know I'm gonna love this forum !! Thanks!

We spend a lot of our time trying to figure out how to lure them to our yards, use the nestboxes we provide, and stick around so we can monitor their nests and see their babies fledge. It's all very high drama, come nesting season! Welcome to the Bluebird Nut Cafe forum! We hope you'll come visit us often. Who knows, maybe you'll get bitten by the "Bluebird Bug", too!

We live in SW Missouri (out in the country) and have had bluebirds at our birdbath for the past two years; we haven't had any houses up yet, though, but plan on remedying that SOON. Actually, my 4 year old built me one for Christmas, but decided to paint it dark green (!) which won't work for the birds - they'll roast in there! so I told hubby that he'll have to build a few more and NOT let my kiddo paint them. I hope to learn a lot here

I am Leslie and I live in Nebraska. I have been into bluebirding for about 10 years. I am county co-ordinator for 2 counties here in Nebraska. Sad to say, I don't have any at my home, but there are many, many, at my cabin. I have a Bluebird trail of 12 boxes. My highest count of fledglings was 56 in the year 2000. Hoping to do that again, now that the knee is better, and I can monitor properly. I have 4 grown daughters, and 8 grandchildren. All but 1 close by. The other daughter lives in California. Nice forum here, and hope I learn how to get around on it. Leslie

You just can't have TOO many emotions, right? I had to LAUGH OUT LOUD over that little misunderstanding about having a pet bluebird! I do NOT have one but, heaven knows, I'd love to!!! IF it were legal and IF I could CATCH one, you bet I'd have a house full of bluebirds! The blues are the real reason I fell straight in love with my LOVEBIRD the minute we adopted him! After doing much research and changing the birdhouse, location, mounting method, and adding the appropriate predator protection, they went on to produce three clutches of five, from WHITE eggs, and in the process, gave me some of the most incredible experiences! Oh, yeah, I'm hooked!
