I just posted in the "introduce yourself" thread and am ready to post a question. I mentioned in that post that I'm a newbie to birding but have read an article or two about bluebirds and nesting boxes.
After starting to put up feeders and get interested in all the birds I have also discovered there is a pair of bluebirds using a nesting box pretty close to my girlfriend's house that the previous owners must have put there.
However, the hole has been widened out by something (squirrel perhaps?) and I'm worried of all of the possible predators that could get in there.
My question is: can I install a reducer while momma bird is close by watching or will she not come back? I'm also wondering about if the box can be opened from the side about checking it for blowflies and raising up the nest onto a hardware cloth platform.
Since I've already foolishly tapped on the box to see if anyone was in there, I'm afraid any further intrusions will permanently make me out to be a villain in the eyes of the parents and the thought of them abandoning the nest is the main concern.
I would appreciate your thoughts and I'm sure others would benefit from this question. Please point me to a previous thread if there is one as I couldn't find any.
