A visitor to my suet feeder |
Lead | |

This is the suet feeder I put out this year for the "other" birds. It's hanging from a shepherd's hook mounted right outside my dining room
window. Although I never saw a bird go near it during the day, the suet cake keeps getting smaller and smaller. Then one night, when one of my kitties was
sitting on the windowsill, staring intently out into the blackness, I discovered why .........

....at the photos and at Jeff's comment!Okay, is that really a mouse or a roof rat? Reason I ask is that we found out we had (and I do mean HAD) roof rats in our attic. I also had squirrels up there but grey squirrels do not run around all night long and "something" up there was. The squirrel relocator came and in about 3 seconds told me that yes, I did have squirrels and that I also had ROOF RATS (the droppings were a dead give away). My husband was out of town and he informed me he would not be back until the "rats" were gone! Janie....Mom to Oliver & Chelsea!

ROOF RATS!!!
Nooooooo, this is definitely a deer mouse, not a roof rat. Roof rat, 7-10 inches long, naked tail, mostly in southern US (you see there is a price to be paid for being so much warmer than us northerners!)Deer mouse, a MUCH smaller 4-8 inches including tail: ![]() Thanks for giving me nightmares, tho, Janie! My son brought home the teensiest little cards from the Chocolate and Coffee Shop he stopped at today. Have you ever seen "House Mouse" cards? They're really popular in gift shops up here in the northeast. They have the cutest little drawings of mice doing the funniest things. Here's one of the cards my son picked up for me today ~ I thought it was so appropriate to our little "night visitor" raiding the bird suet:

I think this may just change the membership's idea of beating down Janie's door to get away from the snow and ice up north!
